Single village in Mahottari sells one billion rupees worth of fox nuts

Janakpurdham, Feb 5: Farmers in Matihani VDC have been selling the fox nuts (Euryale ferox) worth one billion rupees every year. Over a 100 households in the VDC have been growing the plant for its seeds in ponds and lakes close to their houses and producing and selling seeds worth that amount in a year, according to Kamalesh Sahani, a local fox nut farmer.
The Matihani Chamber of Commerce and Industry states that farmers involved in the cultivation of this seed had grown it on 200 hectares of area last year producing 100 metric tonnes of the seeds. Especially the people of the Sahani community are into commercial fox nut farming since long. Considering the commercial feasibility of fox nut, the government, the Small and Cottage Enterprises Development Fund and the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry have jointly organised training on fox nut processing. Twenty local farmers are taking the training.
