South Asian Peasants Convention kicks off in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, Feb 2: South Asian Peasants’ Convention has kicked off in Kathmandu from today aiming at formulation of new strategies on various areas such as food sovereignty, peasants’ right, climate change and land ownership.
Inaugurating the two-day event organized by All Nepal Peasants’ Federation, CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli pressed for commercialization of agriculture in Nepal as well as other south Asian countries which economy is based on agriculture.
The former Prime Minister stressed on increasing productivity by employing new methods and practices in agriculture.
Similarly, Association Chairman and former Deputy Prime Minister Bamdev Gautam claimed that Nepal would be a socialist country if India would not meddle in the Nepal’s domestic affair.
The event which has brought together representatives from 15 peasants’ organizations from altogether five countries including Nepal will discuss about the impact of neo-liberalism to peasants.
