Parliament panel directive to take agro credit to the target groups

Kathmandu, Dec 31: The Agriculture and Water Resources Committee of the Legislature-Parliament today directed the Ministry of Agriculture Development and the Ministry of Finance to take the subsidies on agriculture loans provided to farmers by the government to the targeted groups.The committee in its meeting today also issued directives to the two ministries to provide it with clear information regarding how many farmers took the interest of the grant said to be provided on agriculture loans and their status.Committee president Gagan Thapa stressed the need of readying the policy amendments and other provisions required for the development of agriculture development and implementing them. He called on the bodies concerned to pay attention to make the agriculture insurance effective.

            Speaking in the committee meeting, Minister for Agriculture Development Hari Prasad Parajuli said there is lack of commercialization in the agriculture sector. He pointed out the need of systematizing the agriculture development through policy reform.  The committee members complained that the commercial banks were not cooperating in regard to keep the agricultural loans flowing and implementing the provision of agriculture subsidies effectively.On the occasion, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor Dr Yubaraj Khatiwada said permission would be given to the companies to run their businesses that take the initiatives to provide insurance services focused on the rural areas and agricultural sector, to attract insurance in the agriculture sector.He opined that even the cooperatives working in the name of insurance protection be given opportunity to disburse the subsidized loans.
