Milk Price Hiked for Promoting Farmers

hari pKathmandu, Dec 31: The government has said the decision of increasing the price of milk is meant for motivating farmers and promoting the agro sector.Minister of Agriculture Development Hari Prasad Parajuli informed the today’s meeting of the parliamentary committee on agriculture and hydropower that the decision to hike the milk price is for paying farmers well and to adjust the price vis a vis India.Milk is being imported from India at higher price to adjust its insufficiency in the country, he said, adding domestic production of milk is not sufficient to meet the demand and it is necessary to boost up the morale of farmers.

The Dairy Development Corporation (DDC) Tuesday decided to increase the price of milk by eight to ten rupees per liter effective from Wednesday. Of the increased price, 71 per cent is given to farmers and 29 per cent goes to traders.Farmers in India are offered 55 per cent grant (direct and indirect) by the government. But in the context of Nepal, farmers have no such facility and it is necessary to promote dairy business, he argued.
