Orange Protection Programme launches in Pyuthan and Salyan

Pyuthan, Dec 29: The Orange Protection Programme has been launched in Pyuthan and Salyan districts under the central programme of the government since this year. The two districts are considered as the major orange producers of the country. The programme was launched in some 60 hectares of land, said Ganesh KC, an officer at the District Agriculture Development Office, Pyuthan.

The programme comprises imparting the skills to the farmers to plant and protect the saplings, the use of pesticides and harvesting, among others, KC added. The orange production has witnessed an increase in the district in comparison to the last year, but farmers were found worried to keep it for long due to lack of cold storage in the district, said  Amar Gharti, a local farmer.

The orange production was 774 metric tonnes last year and it reached 800 metric tonnes this year with the implementation of the programme. Oranges have been planted in some 230 hectares of land in the district.  Swargadwari, Maranthana, Tushara and Okharkot VDCs are considered as the pocket area for orange production.
