Food shortage hits locals in northern Gorkha

Gorkha, Sept 19: Locals of different seven VDCs in northern belt of the district have faced acute food shortage on the eve of Dashain festival, one of the biggest festivals of Nepalese. Locals of Sirdibas, Chumched, Chhekampar, Bihi, Prok, Lho and Sama VDCs face the food shortage after the Nepal Food Cooperation and local merchants failed to supply food grains on time, said a local of Sama VDC Bir Bahadur Lama. Due to food shortage, local hotel operators along the Manaslu trekking route are compelled to depend on the locals for food.

Daily essential food items and basic necessary goods oil, salt, cooking gas among others are in short supply in the localities that has adversely hit the locals in this festive season, locals complained. Only the noodles brought from Tibet regiopn are available in the local market, said Phulamu Lama, a local of Chhekampar VDC. However, local food depot has stated that the regular food supply has been halted due to delay in signing with contractors for supplying the foods. -krishi weekly
