Chicken consumption down

Chitwan, August, 9 : Consumption of chicken has decreased almost by 20 per cent in the month of Sawan. According to the entrepreneurs, the sale of chicken had taken a good pace in the month of Asar though it was plummeted after the deadly earthquake on April 25. The belief of fasting on every Mondays in Sawan and the tradition of remaining vegetarians in the month could have caused low consumption of the meat, the entrepreneurs said.

Chairman of Poultry Entrepreneurs Forum Shankar Kandel said that the daily nationwide production of chicken is nearly 550,000 kg but the consumption has decreased by 100,000 kg this month. At present, per kg chicken is sold for Rs 330 while the farmers are selling the live chicken for Rs 230 per kg from the poultry farms. Entrepreneurs say that as high as Rs 60 billion is invested in the poultry business in the nation while Rs 15 billion is invested only in the broiler poultry farming.
