Baglung, Sept. 9: The Living Standard Improvement Programme has increased the income of farmers from organic farming in Taman VDC of Baglung district. The farmers are now happy that they can make income at home after they started commercial vegetable farming for the first time. Vegetable farming was started in closed plastics under the programme, through organic farming started with financial cooperation of the Small Grant Programme, the World Environment Fund, and UNDP and technical cooperation of the District Agriculture Development Office. In Taman VDC, which has comparatively cold climate, farming in closed plastic tunnel is seen successful.
Farmers are amazed to see the production as they had not thought of before, after they started it with this technology for the first time.A total of 42 plastic tunnels have been built in the VDC at an altitude of 2,400 metres. They grow tomatoes, chilli, brinjal, bitter gourd, cauliflower, cucumber and gourds, said chairman of the Farmers Group of the VDC, Kul Bahadur Budhathoki. Five farmers’ groups have been formed. Tomatoes are sold at Rs. 50 per kg, said a farmer Govind Budha. It is sent to Burtibang and Darbang for sale. We had never thought of this, we grow bitter gourd which we never thought of, and tomatoes are very good. All villagers are happy, he said. Chairman of the Swoyamshakti Baglung with responsibility of social mobiliser, and programme launching Baikuntha Sapkota said the vegetables were good due to good management, irrigation and plastics.
