Ginger farmers worried

krishilogoPyuthan, Nov 30: As many as 720 farmers involved in commercial farming of ginger in southern part of Pyuthan district are worried for their produce go in vain as export of it to India was affected due to ongoing border blockade from India. Some 220 farmers are into organic farming while rest are involved in commercial farming across Dhangegadi, Hansapur, , Bangesal, Markabang and Tiram VDCs in the district, according to Chinta Bahadur Shoumel, Chairperson of the Yerawati Multipurpose Small-Farmer Cooperative.

“Around 90 percent of ginger produced here used to be imported to India but regular export is impeded following the border blockade and agitations in Tarai,” explained Shoumel. The Cooperatives exported some 80 tonnes of ginger last fiscal year and has set a target to export as high as 100 tonnes to various Indian markets as Krishnanagar, Rupaidiya and others.
Dan Bahadur Majagaiya, a local farmer, who adopted ginger farming forsaking other occupation, said that he was experiencing hardships in managing daily expenses as his produces were not securing markets. “My financial health is likely to deteriorate if the ginger is not exported in time,” he bemoaned. The total export of ginger from the district was recorded some 2,875 tonnes, amounting to Rs 170 million in the last fiscal year, according to the District Agricultural Development Office, Pyuthan.
